Rahul has performed major roles in traditional and contemporary shadow puppet productions at the Tholpavakoothu and Puppet Centre in Kerala, and at national and international festivals around the world.Ĭlaudia Orenstein, Theatre Professor at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, CUNY, has spent nearly two decades writing on contemporary and traditional puppetry in the US and Asia. Rahul has a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, and a Master’s degree in Folklore Studies, as well as a degree in Acting from the National School of Drama in Bangalore. Rahul is currently a graduate student in the Department of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Connecticut, under the guidance of Professor Matthew Cohen, and practices traditional shadow puppetry together with contemporary puppet productions, as well as scholarly research in the puppet arts. He was born into a family of puppeteers which has preserved Tholpavakoothu shadow theater traditions for twelve generations. Rahul Koonathara is the younger son of legendary shadow puppet master Padmashri Ramachandra Pulavar and puppeteer Rajalakshmi Ramachandra Pulavar. Henson taught in the Puppet Arts program, sent guest artists to the school, provided financial support and scholarships, and served on the board of the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry. Jane Henson was a longtime supporter of the university's Puppet Arts Program. Roccoberton succeeded Ballard as Director of the Puppet Arts Program. In 1964, Professor Frank Ballard founded the Puppetry Program at the University of Connecticut. UConn is home to The Puppet Arts Program and The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry. Mel Carter is a first-year UConn Puppet Arts. The University of Connecticut is a school that was founded in 1881 for agriculture in the town of Storrs, Connecticut. The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry is Connecticuts State Puppet Museum located in Downtown Storrs.
